WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Safety is the cornerstone of everything we do.

In all activities, MasTec Canada is committed to ensuring the safety of our employees, contractors, stakeholders, and the public is never compromised. To this extent, it is critical that all personnel are equally committed to cultivating a workplace whereby safety is at the forefront of all that we do. We are committed to continuously improving ourselves to achieve the highest standard possible for each other, our families, our clients, the environment and the communities in which we live and work.

We are committed to collectively protecting our most valuable assets – our people.

We believe all incidents are preventable and are committed to achieving health and safety excellence and optimum environmental protection through ongoing education, training, strategic planning, and strong management.

All levels of management are accountable for establishing and maintaining a safe work environment.

We do this by providing thorough training and adherence to proper procedures, applicable legislation, and regulations for the provinces within which we operate. This includes but is not limited to, Human Resources and Employment, Occupational Health and Safety, Federal and Provincial Energy and Utility Regulators, and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Acts. 

Our Managers, Supervisors, Employees, and Contractors are made aware of and are responsible to comply with, relevant health and safety legislation, industry regulated practices, environmental protection plans, and established company rules and procedures. Employees are required to conduct work activities with the utmost regard for the safety and well-being of themselves, co-workers, and the environment.

 

 SAFETY PROGRAM

 

Our MasTec Canada Safety Management System is designed to empower employees to proactively identify hazards, risks, and unsafe situations within the worksite and provide our people with the tools, knowledge, and skills to perform their work safely each day.

To effectively identify hazards proactively MasTec Canada utilizes several steps:

  • At the beginning of each project, the management team will complete a Pre-Job Hazard Assessment before work begins. This is the first step in identifying inherent hazards and effectively eliminating or mitigating them.

  • Each morning tailgate meetings are conducted with all personnel on-site including contractors and sub-contractors. Our first opportunity each day is to discuss hazards, challenges, and the ways in which we will effectively control them.

  • Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) are the next way our crews can gather before starting work and discuss the hazards they face for a specific task. It is at this point the crew can discuss the task-specific hazards they are faced with and identify how they will be controlled. This is documented on FLHA forms which are completed for all tasks each day. These forms are updated and reviewed throughout the course of work and anytime new people or visitors enter their area of work.

  • Once work has started hazard identification cards are utilized to document hazards that may not have been present at the beginning of the task and now have the chance to affect the work being conducted. Hazard identification cards are one way our employees are trained and empowered to be proactively identifying hazards before they are directly affected by them. In doing so, MasTec Canada can communicate the hazards company-wide and further prevent the chance of incident proactively.

  • Behavioral Based Observations are utilized as an opportunity to have peer-to-peer interactions to identify at-risk behaviors and to promote safe work practices. We believe identifying at-risk behavior is the only way to improve our processes and procedures while recognizing safe work practices reinforces our commitment to safety excellence.

We are committed to continuous improvement. Our mandate is to provide our workforce with the tools to continuously improve their skill sets and knowledge base. We provide onsite training and collaborative group training to further our people’s education and certifications. Additionally, we are committed to understanding and learning from each day of work - therefore we investigate incidents of all levels, take corrective action where required, and apply what we have learned to be continuously stronger in our practices. We conduct and participate in safety audits and review our safety performance with our teams in order to share best practices throughout our organization.

A Commitment to Health and Safety Culture

Every level of management plays a key role and is accountable for establishing and maintaining a safe work environment. This is achieved through implementing and adhering to proper procedures, adequate training, and following all applicable legislation and regulations in the jurisdictions in which we operate. To achieve this, we are committed to:

  • Completing scheduled inspections – with site supervision and safety advisors

  • Detailed attention to the ongoing health of each project

  • On-going education, training, and strategic planning

  • Continuing education, training, and development of workers in the reduction of workplace hazards and incidents, including:

    • Active employee engagement

    • Ongoing training and education

    • Dedicated safety leadership

    • An effective Safety Management System (SMS)

    • Zero drug and alcohol tolerance policy
